As you navigate your path towards qualifications as an Apprentice at the NAO, you will work with a diverse range of audited bodies including central and local government, working alongside seasoned professionals to deliver work that directly makes a difference to our society.
You’ll start by building your skills through our training programme and 1:1 on-the-job learning and over time, have the opportunity to work on larger and more complex work.
As we support you to develop your skills and confidence, you will have the opportunity to take more of a lead role, develop others and manage teams.
Our apprentices get involved in various projects which may require visits to audited bodies’ locations across the UK, and sometimes even further afield.
Access Accountancy Scheme
The Access Accountancy scheme offers early career insight into the work of the National Audit Office (NAO), with a special focus on both Financial Audit and Value for Money. This initiative is designed to give participants a real taste of the profession, helping them understand how rigorous audit and evaluation underpin public service and value for taxpayers.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the one-week placement is scheduled to coincide with the October half-term week, running from Monday 26th – Friday 30th October 2026, and is based in NAO’s Newcastle and London locations.
